Our survey has begun with two groups of Barbary macaques confirmed. One was confirmed visually with three macaques very considerately sitting on some rocks exactly where the Khizana shepherds said they would be. The 2nd group was harder to confirm but Sherrie found what we wanted – macaque poo! Plus some chewed and discarded acorns. Despite the presence of some very nice mixed oak forest similar to Bouhachem the area has been seriously degraded by fire and there is no connection with any other macaque population. Sadly these two groups are doomed to extinction as we do not have the funding to work with every small isolated population we find. This survey will assist us and our Eaux et Foret partners to decide which groups to concentrate on in to ensure they are sustainable in the long term.
